A bearing when secured with accessories and screws on a shaft on a mounting surface parallel to the plane and vertical to the mounting holes is called as a pillow block bearing. A pillow block bearing can hold any type of bearing such as cylindrical pillow block, spherical pillow block, or any other bearing. The basic design of the bearing is the pedestals and the mounting block that help to withstand heavy vibration to handle heavy loads. The mounting unit hold the bearing in place holding it tightly and prevents vibrational force.
To with stand vibration, the block is fixed, and the base is screwed to the plane surface. This allows the pillow block to fix firmly on the ground or the surface holding the bearing tightly. The bearing is fixed with the help of locking collars, screws or set collars. The outer surface is fixed and does not involve in any rotation and allows the inner surface to rotate. Furthermore, the inner surface is .025 mm larger than the shaft to guarantee tight fit of the bearing to the shaft.
These bearings are mostly made of castiron or cast steel to ensure sturdiness and strength. A bearing pillow block is named after the bearing it holds. For instance, if the pillow bloc hold a cylindrical bearing it is named as cylindrical pillow block bearing.
